Related to admiration of Native American herb-lore, but distinct from it, is the concept of the Indian warrior as a 'Spirit' or 'Spirit Guide.' This imagery harkens back to the early days of the Spiritualist movement in the 19th century, an era during which trance mediums reported their conversations with deceased 'Guides' of all kinds. Spiritual gift is a God-given ability, distributed to individual Christians by the Holy Spirit that allows him/or her to work through their lives to help the church execute its mission on earth.

Spirits and Spirit Guides are discarnate entities and allies of pure spirit who are willing to assist rootworkers, readers and other spiritualists in their Spirit Work. The spirits of the dead, ancestors, ghosts, ascended masters, folk saints, angels, spirits of place, nature spirits, venerated heroes, animal spirits, totem, familiars and other helpful spiritual allies can all be considered Spirits and Spirit Guides.

Many cultures around the world petition spirits, ancestors, and spirit guides in their spell casting work. By working with these entities, the conjure doctor gains the assistance of a spirit behind the scenes; a spirit ally to help accomplish work in the spirit realm.

Within the Spiritualist tradition, the term Spirit Guides refers to discarnate entities who are called upon by spirit mediums to guide them in revealing information sought by a client. They may be personal guides, seen only by one spirit medium or they may be well-known and even popular spirits whom many trance mediums consult.

Petitioning Spirits and Spirit Guides

Spirits not associated with any one religion or form of worship come in many forms. Some are the worker's personal blood-lineage ancestors while others are associated with places of power like the crossroads or the cemetery. There are even some spirits, like the Native American Sauk tribe leader Black Hawk, or the Western and Central African ancestral spirit Bwete, who are tied to cultural lineages or ethnic groups, but whose fame and power has spread beyond their original boundaries. Each of these spirits has a story, a unique way of being petitioned or honored -- and one or more magical or spiritual specialties when it comes to helping people.

The following Spirits and Spirit Guides are petitioned for aid by conjure doctors and hoodoo practitioners who are Spiritualists or folk magicians, or who serve a primarily Spiritualist or folk magical client base. Click on any of the Spirit or Spirit Guide names below to learn more about them, see a picture, and find out what kinds of prayers, petitions, and magical spell-craft are associated with the Spirit or Spirit Guide among Spiritualist workers in the folk magic tradition.

We all have a variety of Spirit Guides who work with us throughout our lifetime and try to communicate with us and let us know of their presence.

Some of these Spirit Guides come and go, while others stay throughout our entire lifetime, assisting us in following our life path.

On average, we have anywhere between 7-12 Spirit Guides on our team at any time.

Spirit Guides, in whatever manner they appear, can

Gambling Spirit Guide Book

  • Reveal themselves in meditation

  • Share their names with you through the naming of others or in dreams

  • Send signs through numbers, animal messengers or synchronicities

  • Communicate with us through symbols, divine alignment, and many more ways

We all have more than one Spirit Guide on our team, and they all fulfill different roles.

You may have one leading guide and others that assist or move in and out of your energy field, throughout your life.

Below you will find the main types -

The 6 Most Common Types of Spirit Guides

1. Protector Guides

Protector Guides are strong in manner and character and often have large, muscular-looking spiritual bodies to match.

These guides are often of indigenous heritage to wherever you are living or in your ancestry.

While many are human, Protector Guides can also appear as large animals such as elephants or panthers. These guides are called upon when you need strength, courage, and bravery.

They are great to call on have with you to watch over you and when embarking on any new project, journey, or era of your life where a higher level of courage is required.

2. Gatekeeper Guides

Gatekeeper Guides, also called Doorway or Portal Guides, are like Protector Guides, but for the Spirit World.

These guides offer psychic protection and support for spirit communicators. They manage your dream time and only allow higher vibrational energies and the most appropriate spirits to work with you.

Gatekeeper Guides usually appear when your spiritual or intuitive gifts are opening, offering you safety and guidance.

In the post, Mediumship Helpers: Deceased Loved Ones Can Help You Communicate With Spirits, I write that our loved ones can sometimes serve this role.

3. Message Bearer (Messenger) Guides

Messenger Guides assist us in finding and obtaining information, improving our ability to get, hear, and deliver messages from the spirit world, and in developing clairaudient or clairvoyant skills.

Many psychics, mediums, and those who work in the Akashic records use Messenger Guides during readings and for gathering the spiritual information they provide to others.

While Messenger Guides are usually humans, they can appear in the form of a bird, usually a hawk or eagle, and often a bird of prey.

This is due to their spiritually symbolic ability to travel great distances in a short amount of time to obtain information quickly and swiftly with little detection.

According to Bernadette at WhatIsYourSpiritAnimal.com, Eagles represent Divine Messengers, and Hawks are thought to symbolize increased spiritual awareness.

So to me, they make the perfect deliverer Spirit Guide of the Divine.

4. Healing Guides

I was first introduced to Healing Guides in a psychic classroom next to Phoenix & Dragon, a famous metaphysical bookstore in Atlanta, GA.

Healing Guides help us with our spiritual, emotional, and physical health.

They are excellent guides for anyone working in a healing profession and also when working to live a more healthy life.

We can each connect with a Healing Guide to improve our well-being. Healing Guides often appear as healers in their time on earth and often appear in Spirit as ancient monks, old-world shamans, and spiritual healers on the other side.

Sometimes Healing Guides appear to people as Mother Mary, Jesus, or Archangel Raphael.

It is normal to have Archangel Raphael to appear as the color green in your mind's eye when present.

Call on this color when you want to draw in healing energy and guidance. Or to call in a Healing Guide, think of a historical healer you know and respect, and imagine them coming into your energy field during your next meditation.

5. Teacher Guides

Gambling Spirit Guides

Teacher Guides help us with our spiritual growth.

Teacher Guides are often our Master Guides, the ones who oversee our life path.

They direct you to books you need to read, classes to take, and introduce you to new and necessary physical teachers here on earth.

Teacher Guides assist us in understanding the philosophical and spiritual aspects of any studies we undertake while on land. Teacher Guides help us learn our lessons through action.

I suggest calling on a Teacher Guide when you are looking to learn more on your spiritual path and expand in any area of spiritual wisdom.

Then, allow yourself to be introduced to teachers, books, and like-minded souls along your way.

6. Joy Guides

Joy Guides bring us joy, laughter, and to remind us to lighten up.

Gambling Spirit

Joy Guides often appear as children, fairies, or otherwise joking spirits.

Going through a difficult time? I suggest calling upon a Joy Guide to help you discover peace and lightheartedness.

Gambling Spirit Guide List

Other Guides do exist, too. There are

  • Lifetime Guides

  • Short-term Guides

  • Energy & Alchemy Guides

  • Power Animal & Totem Guides

  • Earth Devas & Sprites

  • Guides Watching Over An Entire Soul Group

To connect with any of these Spirit Guides, I suggest The Spiritual Gateway Mediation Series, any of the Connecting with Spirit Meditations in The Membership Program's Meditation Room.

I also recommend the text, How to Meet and Work with Spirit Guides by Ted Andrews.

Once you have established contact with one those of specific higher energies, such as a Spirit Guide with a specialty above, it is a great blessing you will feel.

Just like developing any relationship for the first time, working with Spirit Guides takes time, dedication, and effort.

Working with Spirit Guides will strengthen your willpower, lighten your mind and mood, assist you with self-healing work, and promote you becoming more compassionate with those around you.
